Despite complaints that satellite and FM are not available or suitable from various groups in the 'outback' and the Pacific Islands ABC are going ahead with the final shutdown of shortwave broadcasting

    Sad to hear.

Slightly OT there are local commercial stations on SW as alternatives to the ABC (although low power max 1kW).

One I remember hearing here on 3.210MHz is a relay of an FM radio station at Penrith NSW "Vintage FM". Comes in well here after dark.

How many are on air is another matter. Must have a listen to those allocated frequencies above.

What would be involved in the community taking over the maintenance of these essential services?
Surely if the equipment remains in place then it's a pretty simple task?
I'd certainly be willing to put up my hand for a few hours of maintenance each year?

The power of the transmitters and the size of the antennas makes it more than most amateur/volunteer groups could manage I strongly suspect (even if regulations permitted which I suspect they don't).

Info re a petition to keep Radio Australia on air at the link below.

I've just signed, and I encourage you to do the same. Don't know what good it will do, but if you don't ask, you don't get ........

A very dangerous and deadly move to say the least by ABC what is going to happen if something big like a major flood, earthquake or even a cyclone were to leave people who work on cattle stations or out in the bush stranded for days on end without any information or updates i can only imagine that their lame excuse would be "We didn't forsee this kind of thing happening and will be launching an investigation into it"

It seems the problem is compounded by the fact that the French have shut down their AM radio service in Polynesia:

Its going to be a fiery bull session in Parliament as Nick Xenophon or Mr X as his know as will be kicking up a stink about the ABC SW service being shutdown and hoping to introduce legislation to hopefully reverse this decision as i find it unfair that other languages still get transmitted on shortwave and yet our English service gets shutdown
