    Craigieburn fire.

Here are some photos of the fire that started in Donnybrook and headed South at speed. I was on the way home from work and took these with my phone.

It certainly spread fast. The initial out brake seemed to be on Donnybrook road and the wind must have taken it south in leaps and bounds. At one time I heard that there were 100+ cars on the Hume that were stuck with fire on the sides of the road and on the median strip.

There seemed to be a high level of frustration in the time taken to get air support when it was running so fast.

    Bernard

I would say the Air support was being used else where.

I'm listening to the 774 ABC live stream, was planning to leave Melbourne (Glen Iris/Burwood) when I got up (~4pm) ... looks like I will be leaving overnight sometime. Stay safe everyone!

I got a couple on my phone that I will show up later on when I get a chance on top of the Hill near where it started. Most of the Aircraft are either at Gippsland, Hotham area or Grampians, the wind was crazy up there. Just raced

That fire is under control. We have had rain on and off today so that would have assisted the blacking out task. Mind you I was told that there are still a considerable number of appliances on the fire ground. it is about 12 klm from the starting point to the area where it was stopped and something like 2,500 hectares burnt. Even the Hume Highway was closed at one stage.

The learning point is that it ran from a quite rural area towards new housing estates and industrial areas. Fire plans are actually needed by folk living in the new housing estates on the urban fringe, as well as those of us in a more "rural" area.

I use Donnybrook Road quite a bit and there is only a house or two, farmland and a sporting oval between the Donnybrook rail crossing/station and the Hume highway. (The area indicated by the CFA app as the source.)

The grass is soooo dry all through that area, a cigarette butt flicked from a car would have been all that was needed to burn 2,500 hectares.

Whether careless or deliberate they deserve whatever they get...

    Regards
    Bernard
