arvo all,

managed to acquire a desktop tower that have ubuntu on it, having zip knowledge of linux etc, whats the compatibility like for radio software etc? am i better leaving and learning or removing and re-installing said windows platforms?

Ubuntu has a fair range of ham-related appz, but i fear that the mainstream (windoze) appz don't have Linux versions available, or a very few do.

You'd probably be better off reverting back to winblows for your own comfort level and still use your fave ham-apz, BUT, you could also run a dual-boot system with Ubuntu co-existing on the same machine, and give you some time to start learning about ubuntu linux and what it can do, and what appz you can use......... (just choose linux or windows at bootup screen).

If you choose the multiboot option, wipe the disk and install windows FIRST, then run Ubuntu installer, which will detect windows and ask if you want to REPLACE or SHARE(multiboot) with the windows system...

Whatever you do, DONT use Win8, it doesn't have full driver support, and doesn't understand 1/2 the cards out there, sheesh!

Far less complicated to go back to Windaz mate, at least all your stuff would generally be based on that platform.
If you were going to stick with Linux you'd probably need

or a similar shell tool to run windaz based apps that don't have a Linux/Unix based equivalent, and then you'll probably have issues with drivers and commports, could get real messy.

ive seen windows 8 i dont like it, im going to stay as far away from it as i can, i also scored an old pentium p2 350mmx from my fire brigade, unfortunately one of the 2 com ports has a bent pin, im going to try get it back straight but i dont like my chances,

Might be able to replace the commports with a new harness instead? Perfect little box for a decode!

when i get a bit more enthusiasm up ill do some more work in my room, the p2 350 works well though ive got to rat a p166 of the 2 hard drives and a the burner i had in it, network card awe 32 soundcard etc, the cmos/bios battery died and one of the ram chips is dicky in it so i going to send to the local comp swap meet and let someone else play with it,

Ubuntu (Linux) is great for getting new life out of older systems thanks to reduced OS resource demands (commonly associated with newer versions of Windows), reverting back to an older version of Windows can also assist reducing the system loads however as mentioned drivers and software compatibility are an ongoing concern when slapping together redundant tech PC's.

An easier (safer) way to dual boot Linux is to use 2 hard drives if you can spare them. Install each OS on a different drive with only the hard drive you wish to install to plugged in. Then unplug, swap drives and install the next OS. After both OS's installed plug both drives in with the BIOS pointing to the Linux drive to boot to first (works with SATA, but should work with IDE drives). Then when the boot option screen (GRUB) loads you should be abe to select Ubuntu or Windoze. That way if you stuff something on either drive you can pull it out and the other OS will load as if nothing is wrong.

I got the Uniden software for my 396t working using WINE but not freescan which is what I normally use.

Goodluck with Ubuntu, once you pick it up you may never go back to the dark side!!

I can confirm this works with IDE drives (this is how I set up dual boot)
