    Geting into shortwave

    Hi All,

While on my lunch break the other day i went to the shopping centre and decided " I want a new toy and i want it NOW " so i picked up a Sangean ATS-505 to play with.

Firstly its made me happy with AM & FM Broadcast sensitivity. And surprised my by picking up the NBD from Gold Coast airport.

Now i have a few questions.

Now Whats the best parts of the band to most likely here something other than broadcast ? I Did here some CB'ers while i was out in the yard until the rain chased me inside

Also when spinning the dial using AM is there any artefacts to listen for to then flick the switch to SSB ?

    Thanks in advance,

    Matt

I hear a lot of Amateur radio stations around 7Mhz (40m) & 3Mhz (80m) both SSB and CW (morse) transmissions, then there's aviation, beacons and automated weather transmissions, you might want to check out "long wire" antennas too... no more being forced inside due to poor weather and greater RX range

Yes, if the signal is strong enough you'll recognise it has human speech though garbled and indecepherable, I've had better results selecting SSB before hunting signals using the band plan to target specific segments of interest

Ive done that with AM broadcast before and loved the results , Would about 20 CM from the Roof of the house about 10 Meters long be a start. Theres already hooks there for it. Just would have to get mum out of the house long enough so dad and i could run some cable
